Old Downtown Development

Historical Overview


Windsor’s Old Downtown dates from the 1870s, and the advent of the San Francisco and North Pacific Coast Railroad. With a major rail line, hotels, shops and homes, it was the turn-of-the-century center of busy Windsor life.

As the shipping point for a vast amount of locally grown produce and grain, including fruits, grapes, hay and corn, it was also home to two of the largest wineries in Sonoma County at that time.

Redevelopment Efforts


Today, The Town of Windsor, in partnership with a private developer, has revitalized the downtown core. The Town and its Redevelopment Agency invested over $15 million dollars on:
  • Roadway improvements
  • Utility undergrounding
  • Public facilities
  • SMART Train station for commuter and excursion rail - Coming Soon!

Town Green


In the heart of the Old Downtown is a 4.5 acre Town Green that boasts a bandstand, fountain, pools, historical timeline walk, children’s play area and a stand of native blue and valley oaks over 200 years old. It is the perfect place to listen to music, enjoy a picnic or attend a festival.

Mixed-Use Development


The Old Downtown has a mixed-use development that includes two- and three-story town homes with first-floor commercial space. The commercial spaces contain wonderful shops and restaurants. This reflects Windsor's commitment to quality life, allowing families to easily access local businesses that are close to home.

Bell Village


In the heart of Windsor, the new shopping center will be located off Old Redwood Highway, near the Town Green. The 77,600 square feet of retail space will be anchored by an Oliver's Market store and will include a wide array of exciting new businesses. Stay tuned as more information becomes available!
